This is the first annual Apartheid Week in Boston, We are excited to have Boston College students and University of Massachusetts Boston students hosting events at their schools. We have many other colleges and community groups planning events. Apartheid Awareness weeks are taking place in more than 40 cities across the globe (the number of cities is growing daily). This year, IAW happens in the wake of Israel's barbaric assault on the people of Gaza. There is a full week of lecture, stand outs and other events throughout the Boston area. - Naor Ben-Yehoyada, Israeli PhD Student, at 7pm in Merkert Hall 127
Naor will speak about growing up in Israel and his time serving in the Israeli Defense Force. He will also discuss why he decided to refuse to serve in the Israeli military’s reserves after six years of continuous service.
Tuesday, March 24th, 2009-
“The Legal Status of Arabs in Israel and the Occupied Territories,” Duncan Kennedy, Carter Professor of General Jurisprudence atHarvard Law School at 7pm in Higgins Hall, Room 310
Professor Kennedy teaches a course on Israel/Palestine Legal Issues, and has also taught Torts, Globalization, Low Income Housing Law, and Legal Theory. He is the author of numerous books and articles on those and other topics (available on his website, duncankennedy.net).. He was one of the founding members of the Critical Legal Studies Movement.

"Israel/Palestine Class Report Back" at 7pm in Merkert Hall, Room 127
The BC undergraduate Sociology class entitled "Social Justice in Israel/Palestine" will give a report back on their recent trip to the West Bank and Israel last January. The presentation will include a power point slide and pictures from the students' visit.
Monday, March 30th, 2009-
“Israel-Palestine: What future for peace now?" A lecture by Ilan Pappe and Ghada Karmi, at 7:30pm in Devlin Hall, Room 008
Ilan Pappe is Chair of the Department of History at University of Exeter and the co-director of the Exeter Center for Ethno-Political Studies. He was the academic head and founder of the Institute for Peace studies in Givat Haviva Israel (1992-2000) and the Chair of the Emil Touma Institute for Palestinian Studies in Haifa (2000-2008). Pappe has also written on the Modern Middle East, multiculturalism and historiography and is the author of The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, among various other publications.
Ghada Karmi is a Research Fellow at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter, where she lectures on peacemaking in Israel and Palestine. Her books include a widely acclaimed memoir, In Search of Fatima: a Palestinian story, and most recent book, Married to another man: Israel’s dilemma in Palestine.
Tuesday, March 31st, 2009- "Israel and Apartheid: a futile, or a necessary, analogy?" A lecture by Leila Farsakh, at 7pm in McGuinn Hall, Room 121
Leila Farsakh is assistant professor in political science at the University of Massachusetts Boston. She has worked with a number of international organizations, including the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris (1993-1996) and the Palestine Economic Policy Research Institute in Ramallah (1998-1999). Dr. Farsakh has published on questions related to the political economy of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Oslo Process, and international migration in a wide range of journals, including the Middle East Journal, the European Journal of Development Research, Journal of Palestine Studies and Le Monde Diplomatique. Her book, Palestinian Labor Migration to Israel: Labour, Land and Occupation, has been published by Routledge Press in fall 2005.

This exhibit, put together by the Boston Coalition for Palestinian Rights, illustrates the parallels and connections between Israel and South Africa. It documents how the UN Convention on the Suppression and Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid applies to Israeli practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

from 5 – 6 PM in the vicinity of Ruggles MBTA station (orange line).
Meet on the Northeastern University side of Ruggles and then process to the commuter bus area, which will be a spot with good visibility. We will have have relevant signs and hope others will join us with signs along the lines of “We say NO to Israeli Apartheid”.
